Total solar energy generation in the country reached new highs last year, totaling 8.3 TWh. Solar accounted for 11.9% of Belgium’s electricity generation mix in 2024, according to data released by Elia, the country’s transmission system operator. The share of solar in the electricity mix was up from 9.5% in 2023.
With a 23% increase in installed capacity, solar is breaking many records. Renewable generation in Belgium hit a new record, accounting for 29.8% of the electricity mix (compared to 28.2% in 2023). Gas-fired generation hit an all-time low, making up 17.6% of the generation mix (compared to 25.2% in 2023 and 26.9% in 2022).
The share of solar in the electricity mix was up from 9.5% in 2023. It was the largest source of renewable electricity generation last year, overtaking offshore wind. The association said renewable electricity accounted for 29.8% of Belgium’s electricity generation in 2024, up from 28.2% in 2023, setting a new record.
Belgium has witnessed a remarkable surge in solar energy adoption, with new figures from the Belgian association Energie Commune (formerly known as APERe) revealing that approximately 1.8 GW of new PV systems were installed in the country last year.
This significant addition brings Belgium’s cumulative installed photovoltaic (PV) capacity to over 10 GW as of December 2023. The latest data indicates a substantial growth trajectory for solar energy in Belgium over recent years, with installations totaling 1,060 MW in 2022, 850 MW in 2021, 1,010 MW in 2020, 544 MW in 2019, and 367 MW in 2018.
More than 5,000 MW of wind turbines and 6,000 MW of solar panels have currently been installed in Belgium. Elia states that these two renewable energy sources are complementary, as there is more wind energy during the winter when there is less sun.
The global industrial and commercial energy storage market is experiencing explosive growth, with demand increasing by over 250% in the past two years. Containerized energy storage solutions now account for approximately 45% of all new commercial and industrial storage deployments worldwide.
