In Nepal's Gandaki Province, the solar-powered pumping system proved to be a more cost-effective and suitable alternative to electricity-based water pumping systems. The potential applicability of this successful solar pumping system can therefore be assessed for Nepal's hilly terrain [, , ].
In contrast, conventional water pumping systems, reliant on electricity, contribute to noise pollution and generate air pollution. In Nepal's Gandaki Province, the solar-powered pumping system proved to be a more cost-effective and suitable alternative to electricity-based water pumping systems.
Diesel pumps are commonly used in Nepal, particularly in areas characterized by a low head difference. The Operation and Maintenance (O&M) cost of a diesel pump is 2–4 times higher than that of a solar photovoltaic (PV) pump. Solar pumps may face challenges operating at their full potential during rainy, cloudy and non-sunny days.
Following the establishment of the solar lift and electric pump system with the assistance of the Government of Nepal (GON), people expressed high satisfaction with the improved basic water supply service. Metering connections are present at every public tap stand, and it is observed that there is no water wastage.
Each solar array will be 25 kW paired with one 25 HP pump. Under normal conditions, the solar should be able to pump 200,000 liters per day. This should be enough extra water to prevent future shortages. A solar water pumping system of this size has never been tried before in Nepal.
The solar power pumping system is found to be more cost-effective. Seasonal variation of sunlight made a difference as the pump cannot lift full water in cloudy periods. The payback period of the selected project was higher than that of the electric pumping system.
The global industrial and commercial energy storage market is experiencing explosive growth, with demand increasing by over 250% in the past two years. Containerized energy storage solutions now account for approximately 45% of all new commercial and industrial storage deployments worldwide.
