TotalEnergies, on the occasion of Patrick Pouyanné’s participation in the Europe 2025 conference in Berlin, and in connection with the company's integrated development in Germany’s electricity sector, revealed investment decisions for 6 battery storage projects with 221 MW of new storage capacity and an investment outlay of €160mn.
According to the application documents, Tesla is working on building a 50 MW solar energy farm at Giga Berlin which will be supported by a 30 MWh energy storage system powered by Tesla’s own Megapack batteries. Interestingly, Tesla also aims to double its cell production at Giga Berlin.
RWE Generation CEO Nikolaus Valerius said: “With the storage plants in Neurath and Hamm, we are commissioning one of the largest battery systems in Germany. “Our batteries perfectly complement the expansion of renewables, which requires a growing number of large-scale energy storage systems.
The first such battery storage was commissioned in July 2022 at the EUREF-Campus site in Berlin, where it is part of the Micro Smart Grid, a smart power grid linking various energy sources, consumers and energy storage systems. All told, 24 battery modules from six electric cars were installed there.
These batteries round out TotalEnergies’ German electricity portfolio, which consists of: 6,900 developed and operated charge points, including 1,100 with high-power charging. RWE has made the electricity from these systems available on various energy markets. Lord Mayor of Hamm Marc Herter said: “The commissioning of the large battery storage system at the Westfalen power plant site shows that Hamm continues to be a key energy location in the region.
