Mexico's electricity production predominantly relies on fossil fuels; gas, oil and coal-fired power plants can be found in Figure 7. The largest power plants are: oil – Pdte Adolfo Lopez Mateos (Tuxpan) (2 100 MW); coal – Petacalco (Plutarco Elías Calles) (2 778 MW); and combined cycle – Tula (Francisco Pérez Ríos) (489 MW).
According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, Mexican public power producers generated around 374.62 TWh of electricity in 2023, of which 79.6% was from fossil fuels, 12.0% from other renewable sources, 5.5% from hydropower, and 3.2% from nuclear energy (Fig.7) . Figure 3.
